WHAT IS TOPSOIL?

Topsoil is the uppermost layer of soil. It is made up of a high concentration of organic matter and microorganisms, providing the environment where most biological soil activity occurs. Topsoil is made up of four elements: organic matter, mineral particles, water, and air. These elements can be adjusted to fit certain needs: for example, if your topsoil order is going to be used for gardening or landscaping, you might want a higher concentration of organic material. However, soil with a lot of organic matter will not have a strong weight-bearing capacity. If your topsoil needs to be used for construction purposes, consider soil with less organic matter.


Different types of topsoil can be used for construction, gardening, or landscaping purposes:


● Sandy soil is lower in nutrients. It tends to warm up quickly in the summer, but because of its excellent drainage, it tends to dry out.

● Clay soil is much heavier than sandy soil; it also is much more nutrient dense. Clay soil can be used for gardening or landscaping since it retains water so well.

● Silt soil has a high fertility rate and allows water to drain at an ideal rate. However, since silt soil is so fine, rain can easily wash it away.

● Peat soil is very high in organic matter and can retain plenty of water. It is generally used to create a solid base for planting.

● Loam soil is the most popular type of topsoil used for gardening and landscaping. It combines sand, silt, and clay to avoid the negative effects of each type.
